Google Allows Gmail Users to Change Their Primary Email Address

In a highly anticipated move, Google announced in December 2025 the launch of a new feature that allows Gmail users to change their primary email address. This feature enables users to switch their @gmail.com address to a new one ending in @gmail.com, while keeping all their data and services linked to the account intact.

Key Features of the New Feature:

  • Data Retention: No need to worry about losing any emails, photos, or files in Google Drive. Your YouTube subscriptions and history will remain unchanged as well.
  • Old Address as an "Alias": The old address will automatically be turned into an "alias," meaning emails sent to the old address will still arrive in your inbox. You can also use the old address to sign in.
  • Easy Sign-In: Whether you use the old or new address, you'll be able to access all Google services like Gmail, Drive, YouTube, and more.

Limitations to Keep in Mind:

  • The email address can only be changed once every 12 months.
  • A maximum of 3 changes can be made over the lifetime of the account, meaning you'll have a total of 4 addresses (the original + 3 new ones).
  • Once the new address is created, it cannot be deleted.
  • The feature is only available for personal Gmail accounts, not for work or educational accounts through Google Workspace.

How to Check and Change Your Email Address:

  1. Go to myaccount.google.com.
  2. Select "Personal Info."
  3. In the "Contact Info" section, click on "Email."
  4. If you see the option to "Change Google Account Email" or an icon of a pencil next to it, the feature is available to you.

Feature Being Rolled Out Gradually:

The feature began rolling out in certain regions, such as India, and is expected to be made available globally soon. Therefore, it may not be available to all users by January 2026. Google has confirmed that it will be widely available in the near future.

Conclusion:

Google’s new feature resolves an old issue faced by many users who chose old or awkward email addresses in the past. Now, Gmail users can easily change their email addresses without losing any data or services. If you want to learn more or need help changing your address, feel free to ask!
